SSS hires part-time peer tutors in writing, math, science, economics, statistics and other courses. We require at least a B+ (preferably A) in the course, and prefer previous tutoring experience. During the semester, tutors work on a flexible schedule based on their own availabilities. Tutoring for the SSS, EOF and Upward Bound summer programs takes place during the first week of July through the first week of August and do not have a flexible schedule. The Tutor Coordinator position is a part-time position with the primary responsibility of managing the tutoring program. This also includes partial academic coaching responsibilities. Tutor Coordinator must work towards furthering the Rutgers Student Support Services Program mission, goals, and objectives at all times. They must also adhere to all Rutgers University Policy and Procedures. The Tutor Coordinator reports to the Academic Program Coordinator for the Student Support Services Program.


Must be a matriculating graduate student at Rutgers University New Brunswick.
Must hold a GPA of 3.0 or above.
Must have an understanding of the academic needs of first-generation and low income students.
Must have earned a B+ in any material willing to tutor.
Must be organized, well-spoken and personable.
Must be able to commit at least 1 year to this position.

PREFERRED Qualifications

Supervisory experience.
Tutoring experience and providing academic support.
Demonstrated study within the field of communications, education, social work, STEM, English or other related field.
Understanding of the non-academic challenges of first-generation and low income students.

General Responsibilities

Tutoring Support- 75%

Coordinate, schedule and monitor all tutoring sessions, including

Study Groups and Final Exam Review Sessions

Send updated tutoring schedules to designated tutoring centers
Review daily journal entries and addressing any issues and concerns immediately
Monitor student progress and exam grades through journal entry
Address issues and concerns regarding tutors or tutees, reporting to Academic Coordinator when necessary.
Supervise 20+ part-time student tutors
Conduct tutor staff meeting and attends/coordinates tutor trainings for each semester
Conduct tutor observations and evaluation meetings mid-semester
Utilizes Tutor Performance Tracking system to monitor tutor performance
Consult with students and tutors over progress of the sessions
Follow-up with students about their attendance and performance in sessions
Prepare reports and summaries for tutoring

Academic Coaching- 15%

Recommend action plans and introduce skills or resources to students concerns shown in journals or discussions
Facilitate workshops and provide individualized attention to students when appropriate
Develop workshops based on students’ needs and interests.
Complete coaching journals for each one-on-one coaching session.

Other Expectations- 10%

Respond promptly to questions or comments from immediate supervisor or faculty mentor regarding student progress
Assist in conducting Fall/Spring Info Sessions and Makeup Info Sessions
Other duties as outlined by Program Coordinator or Director

Compensation/ Hours
